Best Cell Phone Ring Tones

Mobile phone downloads | Thursday January 14 2010 12:38 pm | Comments (0) Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

Forget the days of hearing that generic cell phone ring that made you anxiously reach into your purse and fumble for your phone. In today’s age of individualization, no one has reason to suffer through homogenous rings with the abundant supply of websites and providers that offer ringtones that can personalize your otherwise ordinary cell phone. Have a song that you love to listen to? Hop online and search for that specific tune and chances are you’ll find a ringtone to go with it. Then, customize the ringtone to play only the part you want to hear when friends call – or, assign a specific ringtone to one particular person. The options are endless.
There are only a few criteria to consider when choosing what website to download ringtones from. First, be sure that your cell phone is compatible with the ringtone you’ve chosen. Verizon users, for example, can be assured that any tune downloaded from Verizon’s website will work with their phone. If you’re considering using any other website or service, be sure to check and see that your phone will be capable of receiving and playing your ringtone. Secondly, be sure that sound quality is acceptable. Most websites will allow you to preview a ringtone before making a purchase. Thirdly, make sure that you understand how and when you will be charged for your purchase. Most major service providers will add any ringtone purchases to your next month’s bill. Once you have these three bases covered, hop online and get ready to jazz up your cell phone!
SouthernLINC
SouthernLINC Wireless offers a broad range of ringtones, wallpapers, calltones and applications. Many users will find that in order to download much of the offered content, they will need to perform a software upgrade on their phones; this is easily accomplished by visiting Motorola’s website and installing the necessary upgrades for the relevant model phone. Like other providers, SouthernLINC allows subscribers to choose from excerpted music, polyphonic rings, celebrity voices and unique sounds for ringtones. Ringtones cost $1.99 for the one-time download fee and are yours to keep for an unlimited amount of time. For phones that are capable of supporting digital content, SouthernLINC offers a plethora of applications that are unique amongst its competitors. Users can choose from financial solutions content, navigation and direction software, sports & entertainment platforms, and news & weather sources, just to name a few. Browsing for content for your specific phone model is easy with SouthernLINC’s handy filter feature. Customers can access all available downloads by visiting the “Browser Apps” function on a mobile device or on SouthernLINC’s website. Cell phone subscribers will appreciate SouthernLINC’s user-friendly purchasing process. When you are ready to buy a ringtone, application, or game, you can preview your purchase, click the “go” button, enter your phone number and you’re finished. Within a few minutes, you’ll receive a text message with a link to the tone or application and directions for installing it onto your phone.
Sprint
Similar to SouthernLINC, Sprint Mobile also offers a variety of personalized ringtones (called ringers) and calltones through its website and cellular phones. Unlike other cellular providers, Sprint offers subscribers a free ringer for the holidays on its website. Sprint’s ringer webpage, Digital Lounge, resembles any other online CD or music website with its sophisticated filter and search functions, graphical CD covers, and all of the hottest music. Sprint’s genres are expansive and appeal to nearly every consumer group by including everything from “Indie Greats” to “Songs for Baby Boomers.” Downloads from the Digital Lounge are $2.50 and appear on Sprint’s monthly bills. The Digital Lounge offers much more than just ringers; you’ll also find screensavers, themes and games. One unique feature in the Digital Lounge is the Content Manager, where subscribers can organize all of their downloads, preview audio clips of ringers and call tones, watch previews of new television shows, and resend purchases to new phones after upgrading cell phone models.
T-Mobile
T-Mobile offers subscribers a variety of ringtone options, including MegaTones, instrumental ringtones of favorite songs; HiFi Ringers, short clips of actual artist recordings; and CallerTunes, ringback tones that callers hear when calling your phone. MegaTones downloads are $1.99 each and can be downloaded by going to “t-zones” on your ringtone-capable phone and browsing the MegaTones category or by logging onto My T-Mobile. T-Mobile’s HiFi Ringers are excerpts from hit songs by today’s top-selling artists at $2.49 each. CallerTunes allow you to entertain your callers by playing excerpts from original artist recordings – and, you can set different CallerTunes for different people. For only $1.49 a month, you can download and store up to 15 CallerTunes; or, for $1.99 per tune, you can choose your tunes for a one-time download fee.
Verizon Wireless
Verizon also offers thousands of ringtones and ringback tones for download. Verizon calls its ringtones VZW Tones, which are available on all Get It Now enabled cellular phones or online at Verizon’s website. Verizon phones and its website allow users to preview ringtones and browse by different categories (like “What’s Hot” and “What’s New). Ringtones are handset specific, so before purchasing a ringtone, be sure to check that your phone is compatible with your chosen tunes. When ready to purchase, users can preview ringtones, add to an online cart, and agree to have the $2.99 fee added to his/her next bill. Each ringtone is available for $2.99. Although it’s tempting to search for free ringtone downloads on the plethora of ringtone websites out there, users should beware: Verizon blocks ringtones from any site other than its “Get It Now” platform from downloading to any of its phones.
AT&T (formerly Cingular Wireless)
AT&T offers subscribers the option to join the Tone Club, a service that allows you to download ringtones every month at a discount. Subscribers can choose from a 3- , 6-, or 9-pack set. This service is available as a monthly subscription that ranges from $5.99 to $9.99 per month. Charges incurred from the Tone Club appear on monthly bills. AT&T also offers a MyMEdia Club, a feature that you can add to your account that allows you to download ringtones, graphics and games from the AT&T Media Mall or directly from your phone for a monthly subscription fee that ranges from $5.99 to $14.99. To download ringtones from AT&T, first ensure that you have a compatible phone (visit the AT&T website to search for your phone and ensure that you have a model that will support the ringtones you want). For those who aren’t interested in a subscription service, you can purchase ringtones a la carte for a one-time fee of $2.49; AT&T also charges for the number of kilobytes or minutes used for the download. Charges for ringtones are reflected on monthly wireless bills. AT&T customers can search for ringtones in one of three ways: online at the AT&T Wireless website, on cellular phones via Media Net (your wireless phone’s version of the internet), or via text messaging. Once the ringtone is transmitted to your phone, you’ll receive a series of prompts that will indicate how to save your ringtone as a default or a specific setting.
Cricket
Cricket offers countless downloads through its web browsers on all web-enabled phones, allowing Cricket users to customize their phones with the hottest games, tunes and applications around. To make buying even easier, Cricket offers a simple click and buy process on its mobile phones, allowing customers to easily purchase and install their downloads in just a few short minutes. For customers who are unsure if their phone supports downloads, be sure to visit Cricket’s website and view the list of compatible phones, which include Kyocera, Motorola, Nokia and Samsung models.
Other Download Sources
Of course cell phone users aren’t limited to their service providers for the latest in ringtones. Music-based websites like MTV, iTunes and Vh1 are cashing in on consumers urges to personalize their mobile phones by offering excusive ringtones, graphics and games. Vh1, for instance, offers ringtones from many of its popular shows, content that is not available through any of the major wireless carriers. In order to download content from VH1, you must be a T-Mobile, Cingular, or AT&T subscriber and have a phone that can play either polyphonic tones or digitones, depending on what you are purchasing. The good news for consumers is that they will not be charged for purchasing an application or ringtone that isn’t compatible with their phone. Ringtones from VH1 are $1.99 each.
MTV and iTunes offer the latest in ringtone content by updating their websites daily. To date, Verizon, Cingular, T-Mobile and Sprint customers can purchase from the MTV mobile store. iTunes, the behemoth of all online music providers, offers an extensive library of ringtones that are only compatible with Apple’s iPhone, serviced through AT&T Wireless. These ringtones are $0.99 each. iTunes allows you to create ringtones from songs in the iTunes Store or your music library. Newer arrivals to the ringtone scene include Jamster.com, Mixxer.com, Thumbplay.com, and Flycell.com, all of which provide membership/subscription plans and a huge variety of genres from which to pick. Users of all major carriers can easily be accommodated by one of these websites.

How Apple Iphone Changes the Market Landscape and What Should Carriers Do?

The runaway success of iPhone across the world has indeed revolutionalised the next generation of phones. Before the debut of iPhone, touch phones were at best a good to have feature. For example, resisitive screens have always been available on Windows Mobile phones, but it was not THE thing. We would always prefer a physical keyboard and a stylus. Apple changed the game when it launched its first generation of iPhone 2G/Edge . We are awed by the convenience of touch and the ease of zooming in and out of internet pages by panning and pinching with our fingers. The capacitive screen brought the touch phones to a new level. (see here for more details on how capactitive screen works: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/iphone2.htm )Since then, we have seen a slew of phones that aim to provide the similar touch and accelerometer capabilities as the iPhone. I said similar and not same because to date, I have yet to test a phone that offers the same level of finess in its touch and accelerometer capabilities (see my other posts on the recent phone models). Storm and G1 are close competitors to iPhone in this aspect – they make it up with many other features that are missing in iPhone today – such as expandable slot, MMS, copy and paste function, just to mention a few). If you may remember, Samsung Omnia had some good success, particularly in countries where iPhone 3G was / would be launched later than Omnia. Now almost all major phone manufacturers from Nokia to Sony Ericsson to HTC have their touch phones series. I won’t belabour too much on each of these phones since this is not the intent of this post. I thought this is healthy for the market. Now, we have more choices. Apple has indeed caused a disruptive change in the competitive landscape in just 2 short years. It has even overtaken RIM’s second position in smartphone sales. Of course, now with Verizon launching Storm, we have yet to see how this will pan out. iPhone is not simply about the Phone itself. In fact, iPhone brings with it an ecosystem – the iTunes. If you are a Blackberry user especially if you are a Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) corporate user, you have very applications that you would buy and load into your Blackberry. Reasons are two-fold. Firstly, the range of applications is limited and certain corporate policies may prohibit installation of third party apps. Secondly, the applications are relatively expensive, say about $10 or $20 or more. Thirdly, traditional Blackberry phone is really meant for one core functionality – messaging. The same goes for Windows Mobile phone or Symbian Phones. To be fair, I must say that there are many third party Windows Mobile applications that are availabie. There is no lack of applications. Then one might wonder, why didn’t the “appstore” concept take the central stage in the past so many years since the availability of Windows Mobile phones. Let’s look back in history. Windows Mobile was an attempt by Microsoft to take away market share from RIM by extending its dominant reach in the PC market and desktop Windows / Microsoft Outlook base to the mobile world. The whole “wow” factor of having a Windows Mobile phone was that you were able to finally synchronise your emails, calendar appointments and contacts over the air. The big “PUSH EMAIL” capabilitiy was why people wanted to buy a Windows Mobile phone. Plus, the early Blackberry gadgets limited phone functions as its primary purpose was for messaging. Even then, it was a real pain to read attachments on Blackberry. Windows Mobile made up for the shortcomings in Blackberry. Not only do I not need an activation pin/password that is required for my Blackberry (which is different from your Outlook user name / password and domain), I can easily set up my email outlook account on my Windows Mobile phone anytime. Reading attachments was much better on Windows Mobile phone. I could also buy third party applications like Documents To Go. In the case of Blackberry, while similar third party apps for reading attachments are available, they are usually on a subscription model (if you are recall, you could not download and save attachments from a Blackberry back then. You could only open them). Fast forward to today. What has Apple done? When Apple launched iPhone 2G, Apple was not targeting at enterprise users. It avoided direct head-on competition with either Windows Mobile or RIM. Instead, it aim straight at consumers. Apple leveraged on its core competence – designed a phone that had the form factor which would wow people as an iMAC or MACBOOK did and positioned the phone as a all-in-one for voice, videos, photos, and music. This is what a Apple is good at. By then iTunes was already widely used by both Mac and Windows users and people were used to buying music and synchronising it into iPod. No doubt there would be some cannibalisation on the iPods, but the upside was far bigger. iPhone would allow Apple to make inroads into the mobile world and take a slice of the mobile market which would tip 1.8 billion by end 2007 (estimate from Yankee Group report).  Apple upped its ante in 2008 with the launch of iPhone 3G and this time, Apple aimed squarely at the enterprise market by annoucing the capability of provide Exchange push mail. This will expand its addressable market to some “prosumers” who are at two minds about using iPhone because of the lack of Exchange push mail. Most importantly, the linchpin of Apple’s iPhone strategy again lies in its iTunes contents and ecosystem. This time, it announced the availablity of appstore on iTunes. Free applications would be available. Paid applications would start as low as $0.99. This lowered the entry barrier for consumers to try out many types of applications. I would not mind paying just under $5 for any application. Most of the applications were largely games and utilities tools initially but as more and more corporations adopt iPhone, we see that more and more software developers are now incorporating mobile applications on iPhone into their roadmaps. I’m sure Apple would realise that as user loads more and more applications onto the iPhone, he is less reluctant to switch to a different phone and loses all the applications that he has been using or has bought. This is very strong customer stickiness. RIM must have realised this and thus it’s luanching its first Application Centre to support Blackberry OS 4.7 (which is what Storm’s OS is). If you take a leaf from Apple’s iPod strategy, Apple is not going to rest on its laurels and cede the market share. Apple will push out new upgrades on iPhone firmwares (Just look at the time interval between major firmware upgrades 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 – it’s getting shorter). Let’s see over the next few months how the competition will heat up. In the meantime, sit back and hold tight to the coming mobile war. While social networking such as MySpace, Facebook, Twitter became popular way before iPhone took the market by storm (let’s see if Blackberry Storm will replicate this success), iPhone has popularised this even more. Now, I can easily access do my ‘twittering’ or update my flickr or facebook easily with one button on the iPhone. The types of iPhone social networking apps, particularly for Twitter, reflects the underlying trend. Now even Sony Ericsson X1 has a new panel for Facebook. Storm will also come with pre-installed application for Flickr and Facebook. Given the increasing penetration of social networking tools, I’m wondering why carriers (telco operators) are not leveraging on this for their marketing or customer support. I think there is a lot of opportunity in the social media marketing that the carriers are missing out. I have yet to come across a carrier that is proactively using blogs or twitter to do product releases or news updates or to use social networking tools to make product or event annoucements. Going forward, phones will become more powerful and applications running on the phones become the key factor to creating customer stickiness. Carriers should exploit this opportunity to work closely with the handset manufactureres or the independent software developers to pre-install certain applications unique to them. Carriers should also be aware that customer support has to go beyond just supporting the phone hardware itself if carriers really want to be the first touch point to customers. It’s no longer good enough to just set up retail stores to sell the phones. Carriers need to understand the needs of the customers and provide the right type of phone to customer. That’s true customer service.

How to Hack a Verizon RAZR v3m Cell PhoneVerizon’s history of blocking cell phone features is nothing new. From their first branded phones, to their latest gadget offering, Verizon locks-down their own cell device operating systems. Would you like to both utilize and customize your Verizon phone the way Motorola originally designed the RAZR? With a few pieces of software, you can access and customize your own RAZR. It’s your phone, and you paid for it; you should be able to utilize all of its functions. This guide will walk you through finding the right software, connecting your RAZR to a PC, and changing settings on the phone to enable both USB and Bluetooth file transfers with Windows XP.Steps 1. Download the drivers. Motorola’s v3m drivers for Microsoft Windows are required to connect your RAZR to a PC via a mini-USB cable. One approach is to download a “USB Driver Tool” and the “USB Device Drivers” from Hack the RAZR’s site. For the latest version, download Motorola’s EU Driver Installation from their support site. 2. Extract the driver archive to any folder (if applicable). For Motorola’s official driver release, the extracted file is “Motorola_EU_Driver_Installation_v?.?.?.msi” (question marks represent digits of the version number), and for third party distributions, the extracted files should include eight .inf files and one .sys file. 3. Install the drivers. None of the v3m drivers are Microsoft-certified, so be sure you’ve obtained them from a reliable source before you continue. * Recommended install. This requires the official Motorola drivers from their support site: http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/nss/usb_drivers_pc_charging_drivers.asp 1. Launch the installer by double-clicking on the “Motorola_EU_Driver_Installation_v?.?.?.msi” file (question marks represent version number placeholders). 2.1st window: click the “Next” button. 3.2nd window: select the “I Agree” radio button if you agree to the license shown in the window, then click the “Next” button. 4.3rd window: click the “Close” button. 5.Connect your RAZR. Find a “Type A” USB to “Type B” Mini-USB cable. Connect the USB end to your PC, and the Mini-USB end to your RAZR. The Windows hardware wizard will show a series of notification balloons from the system tray as it detects and automatically installs drivers. * Alternative install. For drivers distributed by a third-party that have no installer: 1. Connect your RAZR. Find a “Type A” USB to “Type B” Mini-USB cable. Connect the USB end to your PC, and the Mini-USB end to your RAZR. This should prompt a hardware wizard to appear in Windows. 2. 1st window: select “No, not this time” radio-button, then click on the “Next >” button. 3. 2nd window: select “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)” radio-button, then click on the “Next >” button. 4. 3rd window: click on the “Include this location in the search:” check-mark box, enter the path to the downloaded p2k drivers, then click on the “Next >” button. 5. 4th window: click on the “Continue Anyway” button. This only appears when Driver Signing is set to “Warn” in the “System Properties” > “Hardware” > “Driver Signing” options of Windows XP. 4. Download and install PST. Motorola’s Product Support Tool version 7.2.5 is the latest as of this writing, but version 7.2.3 will also work with current p2k software. The PST software is intellectual property of Motorola, so no additional help or screen shots may be provided for obtaining the software. 5. Download and install a p2k seem editor. The p2k Seem Editor is a tool that provides a direct means of manually changing bits of a mobile device’s settings. The program only needs be extracted from its archive to function, as it has no installer to run. Originally found on HowardForums.com years ago, the original author and/or distributors have left no information to track the application’s version or contributor history. Fortunately, the application is quite stable and reliable in its currently distributed form. Distributions of the application contain a Functions.csv file that assigns comments to specific seem bits, a hexedit.dll file, usually a readme.txt or .nfo file, and the p2kseem.exe program file. 6.Perform a seem edit to enable file transfers. The Seem Editor is sectioned into three main interface groupings: the seem location, hexadecimal grid, and bit switches. To use the seem editor, values are manually entered into the seem location area in the bottom right corner of the window. This will provide search criteria when the “Load from phone” button is clicked. Upon a successful read, hexadecimal data will appear in the top left corner of the window. Clicking on any byte will show the appropriate data in the bit switching area at the bottom left corner of the window. 1. Load the p2k Seem Editor. 2. Enter 2742 into the “Seem” text box of the “Load” group. 3. Leave the “Record” text box of the “Load” group at the default value of 1 or 0001. 4. Enter 0000 into the “Bytes (h)” text box. 5. Click on the “Load from phone” button. 6. Rows of hexadecimal values should appear in the upper left corner. If you received a connection error, close the Seem Editor and reset the connection with PST by creating a new phone book, then load phone’s data into the new phone book. 7. Locate the row designed by the number 000060. 8. Click on the 11th column of dual digit hexadecimal values on this row. The “Offset” will read 006a in the “Selected byte details” group. Alternatively, click on the first column of row 000060 and use your keyboard’s arrow keys to navigate right until “Offset” reads 006a. 9. “Bit 0″ in the “Selected byte details” group should have a comment next to it: “Bluetooth Or USB file transfer…”. Put a check next to “Bit 0″ (comment’s suffix will change to “on”), and a check next to “Bit 1″. 10. Double-check your bit changes and an offset value still showing 006a. Verify that the “Save” group and “Load” group check boxes’ values match. Ignore the text alignment of the text box contents. 11. Click on the “Save to phone” button. 12. Click on the “Yes” button. 13. Change is complete. Unplug your phone from the USB connection and power cycle it for the changes to take effect. 14. Search for other seem edits online to change settings that would otherwise be unavailable in Verizon’s modified RAZR operating system. 7.Download and install a file transfer utility. Popular file transfer utilities include Mobile Phone Tools, BitPim, and P2k Commander. Find one that works best for your tastes. None of these applications are perfect, but each offers a different twist of functionality. P2k Commander is often touted as the easiest and most straight-forward of p2k-based file transfer utilities, even though it is full of bugs and coded with poor error handling. P2k Commander is authored by an individual from Hungary, with contributors from all over the world. As of this writing, the current version is 4.9.E. Once you’re comfortable with one, you should be able to browse, copy, and delete files, as well as view individual file and storage information. 8. Enjoy your new RAZR functionality! Now you’ll be empowered to use all of your RAZR’s features. Insert a 1GB flash card in your v3m and treat your phone as a camera, thumb drive, and MP3 player, all in one device. Enable Java and download Java apps to your RAZR (Brew-based Java apps only). Enjoy the newfound freedom of a completely unlocked mobile device.Tips * If you’re only interested in using your PC’s USB connection to charge your RAZR, follow steps 1 to 3. The remaining steps are focused on making changes to the RAZR. * Unlike alternative methods of hacking the Verizon’s RAZR, this process does not require flashing your phone’s firmware with a version for the v3c. You will still be able to use your flash memory slot after this process. * Do not run more than one p2k application at a time. Running multiple p2k applications concurrently causes problems because p2k drivers expect one connection at a time. * When using “BitPim” software, connect your mobile phone after the application is open. Select “v3cm” for your v3m phone when attempting to detect the phone. * When using “P2k Commander” software, connect your mobile phone before opening the application. The software will read from the phone once the “P2k Mobile Phone” item is selected from a drop-down list at the top. * Always disable a style, theme, feature, or service before deleting or copying over related files. For example, select a sound style other than “Master Volume” (ie: select “All Off”) before deleting or copying over ring tones. Failing to do so may result in partially copied files or driver corruption as a result of copying with P2k Commander. * The “USB Driver Tool” from Hack the RAZR’s site is a valuable tool in resetting your PC’s Motorola v3m drivers. This is especially handy if you move your RAZR to a different USB port on your PC or attached USB hub. It should be noted that not all RAZR phones are alike. When looking for items to change, make sure you are looking at the correct information for the the phone you have. CDMA phones like the V3M are different from GSM phones such as the V3 and V3i. * When in doubt, try disconnecting your RAZR from USB, power cycling it, and reconnecting it to USB. If that doesn’t work, disconnect your RAZR, run the “USB Driver Tool”, restart your PC, reconnect your RAZR, and reload all of its drivers. * When replacing the current theme’s files on your RAZR, choose a different theme from the Display menu ahead of time. Switch back to the theme after the new files are in place. Sometimes the RAZR will freeze after a file change. If that happens, a simple power cycling should correct it. * Do not copy over ring tones larger than 250KB in size or longer than 30 seconds. To be safe, create ring tones smaller than these values to account for metric Byte conversion rates (ie: 1,024 Bytes = 1 KB). The RAZR v3m seems to work best with mono mp3 files of any sampling rate. Use sampling rates around 48kHz for longer MP3 files. * Java applications do work on Verizon’s v3m, but only if they’re Brew-based. Regular .jar or .jad files wiill not work (reference).Warnings * While certain practices, such as customizing your phone are both ethical and legal, other practices are not. Also, the process itself of using Motorola copyrighted software is only legal by those with a license to use it. * Do not follow this guide unless you’re willing to take the necessary risks. Your phone, Verizon warranty, and Verizon service may be at stake. Are the risks of hacking your phone worth the additional functionality and/or customization? * Most likely, you can flash the phone back to the original software, or remove the seem edits. There is no way to find out if a user has seem-edited the phone if you change them back to factory settings. * Editing files on your RAZR may flag your phone as modified if it is ever turned into Verizon for service. It may also void your Verizon warranty, insurance, etc. Most of the well known edits are fully reversible provided you backed-up your phone’s original files and remembered which seem edits you made. * Performing seem edits may inadvertently turn your phone into an expensive paperweight. Be extremely careful and meticulously accurate when following directions for seem edits. If possible, connect your phone directly to the USB port on a PC or through a quality USB hub. Inexpensive or low quality USB hubs may inadvertently add lag and decrease the power of USB connections. * Always make a back-up copy of any file you plan to edit or replace. * To comply with copyright laws and ethics, links to pirated software (ie: Motorola Product Support Tool licensed for only mobile phone retailers) used in this process will not be posted. An external link listed below points to a RAZR hacking site with their own links to such software. Supplying software that violates a copyright law is illegal, and providing the link to such software may be unethical. WikiHow does not condone software piracy in any form.Things You’ll Need * Verizon Motorola v3m mobile phone * Microsoft Windows XP sp-2 installed on a PC with at least one USB port free * “Type A” USB to “Type B” Mini-USB cable of any length * Downloaded software as explained in the “Steps” section: o Motorola v3m (p2k) drivers o PST (Product Support Tool) 2.7.3 or 2.7.5 o Seem editor that is p2k-based o File transfer utility that is p2k-based

What mobile phone to choose?

Mobile phone downloads | Sunday December 13 2009 6:54 am | Comments (0) Tags: , , ,

There are so many mobile phone models out there, with so many features with fancy names, putting us in a big difficulty when we come to a shop and try to take a decision on what to buy. And the difficulty is often even bigger when we find out that the phone we’ve chosen isn’t linked with a package from our operator. Eventually we realise that we’ve wasted 2 hours of our time shopping around without coming to any decision.

I’ll tell you what I usually do and then you could decide if it suits you as well.

First of all, I start with Amazon.com. I go there to look for bestsellers, to check the design and the features which are important for me. The good thing is that on Amazon.com you can find SIM-free mobile phones, so you could stay with your operator without buying from it a new phone that you don’t quite like.

One may think that it’s easy to check which the bestsellers are and what is the coolest design, but what about the features? How do I know what features are the most important, the newest and the most useful? Well, that’s a tricky one. There are lots of features that are called with “upper-case letters” that you don’t know what they stand for and what they really mean.

You probably have an idea about what design you would prefer and the purpose of use of your future phone, don’t you? So features like touch-screen, full keyboard and slide / clam / tablet shape are easy to keep in mind for you to take a preliminary decision.

After that, you need to decide on features like screen width, camera performance, network. So the touch-screen devices have a screen superior to 3 inches. A good new non-touch phone has a screen of 2.4 inches or more. A 3.2 mega-pixel camera is currently considered basic. Anything below that can’t take good pictures unless your’re outdoor and it’s sunny. The best cameras are now the ones of over 8 mega pixels. There are even phones with 12 mega pixel cameras. If you use your phone for downloads, you better buy a 3G handset against an EDGE one. You may also see acronyms like HSDPA or HSUPA. These tell you that the speed of data on your phone is even higher than simply 3G. HSUPA has a better speed than HSDPA. The WiFi and Bluetouth features are also quite important nowadays.

Finally, you could check what games and applications are embedded on the phone. The motion games are of course something new and interesting. Business applications like Office Mobile are very useful as well. Navigation is not as used as it pretends to be, but it’s good to have this feature just in case. They call navigation also GPS or a-GPS. Many other apps are just marketing tricks, because you will never use them apart from showing off in front of your friends.

So, after I’m with all this info in mind, I go and check on Amazon.com and make a short list of phones and brands that I would like to have. Then I check if my operator has them in its shop so I could go over for a “touch and feel session”. Then I come back to Amazon.com, place the order and get it in less than a week with 12-month guarantee.

This way I never waste time: I do the pre-selection in the evening, while my wife is watching the X-factor, I do the touch & feel while my wife is shopping and I do the order on Amazon.com during an TV ad break.

The remarkably affordable social mobile phone, the INQ1, gets an updating facelift with the launch of two handsets from the Hutchison Whampoa company, INQ Mobile.  First off is the QWERTY-equipped INQ Chat 3G that looks like a Blackberry Curve but without the hefty price tag.  The other is the modest and conventional entry-level INQ Mini 3G that’s almost a steal for a sub-?100 mobile phone.

Both phones take the level of affordability to a higher plane without compromising on the basics that have made the INQ1 a popular and highly regarded pioneering mobile phone for the social networking crowd.  But the INQ Mini 3G takes the cake for getting the basics of a social Facebooking phone right with the most wallet-friendly price. Built to address a market pining for a quick and easy messaging phone, the Mini 3G also has what it takes to give you imaging and multimedia features that won’t disappoint even if they take the back seat.

Just the Right Features for Social Networking

INQ could have really gone cheap on a social networking phone by not putting any camera or multimedia feature on it and stuck with a purely messaging internet feature.  But giving a nod to the popular features we’ve taken for grant, the INQ Mini 3G doesn’t disappoint in them either. Just don’t expect cutting edge marvels reserved for flagship mobile phones.

Prudent Features Cuts

All that for a sub £100 mobile phone?  There must be a catch.  Yes. There are a few cost-cuts to give you a most wallet-friendly price tag. But a prudent and wise cost cuts.

If you need a great multimedia and imaging mobile phone, you may have to look elsewhere.  The INQ Mini 3G is a social networking phone with the right features to do the job fast and keep you entertained.  That’s where it shines.  There rest are perfunctory nods to the trendy versatile phone that has everything.  It’s no jack-of-all-trade phone.  At a sub ?100 price, there’s no better value out there.

But do not go looking for totally free sites or services you know the ones that you or your kids would find and install on your computer where you joined a network that had ads flying around and all sorts of other things that eventually caused you a lot of headaches.

I personally had to redo my computer 5 times because my kids did this.

There are a few rumors going around that the iphone can get a virus or some other exploit that an attacker may use to get your info so why take a chance with a bad site just to get free iphone downloads. A Flagship Like No Other, the HTC HD2 Mobile Phone

Mobile phone downloads | Friday December 4 2009 12:41 pm | Comments (0) Tags: , , , ,

After much guesswork and anticipation on the HTC Leo, the Taiwan mobile phone maker HTC finally releases the Leo under the name HTC HD2 as its latest flagship mobile phone.

The new HTC flagship provides one the most delightful movie viewing experience on a mobile phone. Its expansive 4.3-inch WQVGA 400×800 touchscreen display using the same multitouch capacitive technology found on the iPhone account for its standout appeal that few flagship smartphones can boast of.

With the HTS Sense user interface on the Windows Mobile OS, the HTC HD2 handset delivers a more intuitive navigation made possible with homescreen widgets that made access to any application, game, file, media content, contacts and social networking sites just a touch away.  HTC certainly took advantage of the generous viewing real estate of the HD2.

At a Glance

The HTC HD2 confirms most of the leaked specifications on the HTC Leo.  It has the usual multimedia element of a full-featured versatile smartphone.

The HTC HD2 is housed in a slim and sexy body that measures 120.5 x 67 x 11 mm which is just slightly wider than the HTC Touch sporting a smaller screen.  The narrow bezel around the screen gives the handset an all-screen look and its compact size for a large screen.  A bit hefty at 157g, but that’s quite acceptable for full featured flagship handset with one of the largest screens in the market.

If you are interested in the HTC HD2 then you should check out some of the online mobile phone deals at places like Best Mobile Contracts. They also compare mobile broadband deals ensuring that you are always connected.
