Gaming technology has come along in leaps and bounds in recent years. Games companies are constantly developing new ideas for their next-gen consoles – which offer gamers the chance to experience cinematic graphics and challenging gameplay.

However, aside from the hardcore gamers there are those who play games occasionally. The casual gaming market has become big business for smaller companies, allowing them the chance to showcase their talents on a smaller scale – whether on internet games sites or through their mobile phones. Even big budget titles such as Tomb Raider and the Worms series have, in the past, been adapted for mobile phones in order to attract interest in the series.

And such expansion seems to be proving popular with mobile users – in particular teenagers. With many under-16’s owning a mobile phone, the music and gaming markets have proven popular with this particular target group. As well as bands being given the opportunity to promote their music through text messaging alerts, independent games companies now have the opportunity to showcase their programming skills by creating content for mobile phones, which are then downloaded from website to handset for a small fee.

Movie studios have also made use of mobile phone technology in order to promote their latest productions – usually in the form of a cryptic puzzle – based either within the film itself or around the plotline. By utilising this kind of advertising and offering downloadable content directly onto mobile phones and blackberry devices, studios can help raise the profile of upcoming films before they come out in the cinemas. And because you’re in charge of the handset, you decide whether you delete the game in order to make room for another, or keep it loaded to show off your high score, or challenge your mates to beat it.

The majority of games on mobile phones take the form of quirky little Flash or Java-based games for a range of phones. As handset technology improves, the potential to add faster processors and improved graphics chips means that gaming on the move could soon be on a par with some of the earlier consoles. And because the technology is not linked to the tariff you’re on, even pay as you go users can download the games and play on the move.

Indeed, with many of us having access to cheap mobile phones, the mobile gaming world is one that has seen increased growth, with a wide range of titles available to suit all tastes. Many handsets now come with a couple of Java-based games pre-installed, but there are a wide variety of websites out there, which offer the chance to download ringtones and games for a small fee.

So, with the world of mobile phone gaming continuing to expand and garner interest, as well as many phone companies looking into additional technology – such as game controllers to attach to handsets – who knows what heights the mobile gaming world could reach? The future could soon be in the palm of our hands.

I am happy to see that there’s still some terrific writing left out there. I’m tired of google delivering me trash.
